Calibrating a 3D printer in one evening

Calibration guides can be overwhelming. This is the short order that works for most printers.

  1. Level the bed with the paper test, then print a single layer square in each corner.
  2. Set the Z offset until the first layer is slightly squished, not transparent.
  3. Tune temperature with a temperature tower for each new filament.
  4. Tune retraction only if you see stringing.

That is it. Everything else is fine tuning that you can do later, one change at a time.
